Map of Finland and neighbouring regions, 1595

This map of Sweden and Norway with surroundings was made in 1595 at Duisburg by the famous Belgian-German cartographer Gerardus Mercator (1512-1594). His map of the Nordic countries was part of his last, posthumous work called Atlas sive cosmographicae meditationes de fabrica mundi et fabricati figura. To a large extent, the map is still based on Olaus Magnus' Carta marina of 1539. Apart from other mistakes, the nation of Estonians has incorrectly been placed in central Finland.
