View of a shipyard on the Daugava River at Riga, c. 1786

This drawing, showing the shipyard of Christoph Raawe on the Daugava River. was made around 1786 by Johann Andreas Oesen (1762-1804). This shipyard was one of the few attempts to develop shipbuilding at Riga. Although the town was an important trading centre, its merchants were dependent on foreign (mostly Dutch) skippers and vessels as their own shipping companies were rather insignificant.
